Food access is being used as a bargaining chip and people are going hungry in our neighborhoods today. KHN has important opportunities to address this unnecessary food crisis in the coming days and weeks:
- Thank you to everyone who brought donations at the beginning of November when SNAP entitlements were delayed/denied! Members are encouraged to take food directly to local food banks & free pantries as often as you are able.
- Drop off food at KHN during our Shabbaton Food Drive on November 21 & 22nd . Help double our collective contribution to the food bank from the High Holidays!
- Bring prepared food and help at the KHN’s Shulchan Shalom Welcome Table! KHN will host the Shulchan Shalom Welcome Table on Saturday Nov 29th in White Center at New Beginnings Church (formerly Body of Christ). KHN members will be totally responsible to prepare food and serve meals to over a hundred hungry neighbors—we expect the need to be great, so please plan to incorporate this important KHN Tikkun Olam event into your Thanksgiving Weekend.

- Take food directly to your local food bank (shelf-stable and fresh food accepted!) &/or drop off non-perishable food at KHN on Nov 21 & 22.
Foodbanks CAN Accept
They will gratefully accept non-perishable food items that are unopened and in good condition. Canned goods that are low-sodium or no sugar added are great for our clients with dietary restrictions. They also accept any fresh fruit or produce, but please clean it first! They accept donations of pet food and kitty litter (opened bags of dry food are acceptable) for our Pet Pantry and diapers and formula for our Baby & Child Corner. Check our wish lists for items that we’re always in need of.
Foodbanks CANNOT Accept
For health code reasons, they cannot accept any home prepared foods, opened packages, cans without labels or rusted, meat that has been stored in a home refrigerator or freezer, or backyard eggs. If you have a question about whether they can accept something, please call (206) 932-9023.
- Plan to bring prepared hot food to the Welcome Table/Sulchan Shalom on Saturday Nov 29th (and stay to help serve if you can.) We need tasty, warm, high protein, filling food to meet a great need. This is a fantastic actvity for the whole family! People of all ages (including little kids) can help plan, shop, prepare and drop off food. Tweens, teens, adults, elders can help serve during the meal. It is a wonderful way to express gratitude and support neighbors.
- Be a food drive driver/deliverer! We need SUVs, crossovers and/or vans to load up donated food during the food drive on the evening of Friday Nov 21 and the morning/day of Friday Nov 22. If you are able to help in this way, please let us know at execdir@khnseattle.org
